What is Bookbonding? The CSU system has always prided itself in being a more affordable alternative of higher education for students versus the UC system or various private colleges in California. In recent years, that is a trend that is changing as tuition, fees and book costs are increasing significantly “due to a weakened economy and lack of state funding.” As CSU students struggle to keep up with these costs, they are forced to also contend with textbook prices “which are going up four times the rate of inflation,” says Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg. According to CSU, Stanislaus’s website, the estimated cost of books for a full-time undergraduate averages $1,754 yearly. Students from the Business and Communication classes from CSU, Stanislaus feel that there is a strong need to create this campaign, Bookbonding, to help with the financial costs that most students struggle with currently and create awareness that there are other alternatives to paying such high textbook costs. With the donations received (money to buy cheaper, used class books and current class books donated) we hope to save Business and Communication students approximately $200-$400 in the Spring 2014 semester.

Why the cause?  Decreases in education funding  Increased textbook prices  Increases in tuition

Benefits  Bookbonding will help make textbooks more affordable and accessible.  Also gives university alumni an opportunity to give back to their alma mater.  Allows the community of Turlock to donate to the good cause of education.

Objectives  Publicize Bookbonding in the Turlock Journal and Modesto Bee, CSU Stan’s newspaper, The Signal, the student’s radio station, KCSS 91.9 in the month of December 2013 through January 2014.  To have at least 500 students (250 communication majors and 250 business majors.) attend the 2 day event on February 1-2, 2014 10am -2 pm in the USU Event Center.  Raise $40,00 in donations from our two “Casino Night” themed social mixers with CSU, Stanislaus alumni and faculty.

Audience  Primary audiences include:  Current business major/minor students  Current communication major/minor students  Recent/past alumni from CSU Stanislaus males/females, ages 18-25 years old.  Secondary audiences include:  Males/females ages 30-40 years old financially able and willing to donate any monetary amount to help the struggling student base.  CSU and college alumni and faculty who would like to give back as people who had been in the struggling position previously.

Strategies Bookbonding’s main strategies are to promote CSU, Stanislaus student’s “class book needs” with ads placed in newspapers and announcements placed over the radio. We hope to create awareness for as many people as possible. As it is a New Year, we hope to appeal to people’s resolutions of “helping people and giving back to others.” We will also be appealing to CSU Stanislaus alumni and faculty for donations as they see and hear first hand, student’s struggles.

Tactics Publicize event in The Signal. Placing ads in local newspapers prior to event. Utilize social media applications on behalf of the university. (ie: Facebook, school website, etc.) Tactic #1 Make about 1500 flyers to maximize awareness. Post informative flyers around campus and hand out to students and staff to promote event. Place flyers on vehicles parked on and around campus. Tactic #2 Host two “Casino Night” themed mixers to fundraise money to purchase books for the event. Mixers will include games, appetizers/drinks, raffle tickets for prizes and silent auction. Comm. mixer- 12/13/2013. Business mixer- 1/17/2014. Tactic #3

Conclusion and Expected Outcome We expect to exceed our expectations in the hopes of opening this event to all majors, every semester. If Bookbonding is successful and enough donations are made then we will be able to help students in every major to afford course textbooks in the future.
