Scientific Method
2
Experiment A process used to gather observations and test hypothesis.
3
Variable What is being manipulated (changed) or measured in an experiment.
4
Dependent Variable The factor is forced to change because the independent variable is changed. What is measured!!!!
5
Independent Variable The factor in an experiment that is changed by the experimenter.
6
Control Variable The group that does not receive the experimental treatment.
7
Constants The factors in an experiment that do not change.
8
Hypothesis An explanation of how something works. Usually an - If…Then…- statement.
9
Materials A list of items needed for the investigation.
10
Procedure A list of steps to be followed during a scientific investigation. Number your items (1, 2, 3…..)
11
Data Table A place to store data during a scientific experiment.
12
Graph An illustration used to show the relationship between variables.
13
Results A summary of the data collected during an investigation.
14
Conclusion A summary and reflection of the investigation which occurs at the end of the experiment.
15
Positive or Direct Relationship As one variable increases the other variable also increases. (Scatter Plot with a best fit line going up)
16
Negative or Indirect Relationship As one variable increases, the other variable decreases. (A scatter plot with a best fit line going down)
17
No Linear Relationship The relationship between two variables that cannot be shown with a straight line. (Scatter plot without a best fit line)
