Do NOW Textbook Open your textbook to page 407 Answer all of the questions – compare your answers with your table group. Review Quiz each other on chapter 11 vocabulary. 1

Homework and Announcements Due – Textbook pages 402-406 Vocabulary mind map in notebook Vocabulary Quiz Today Science report updates Homework USA TestPrep, Remediation 2

Quick Review What is a solution? What is a solvent? What is a solute? 3 mixture containing a solvent and at least one solute part of solution – usually largest amount universal solvent – H 2 0 part of solution that is dissolved by the solvent

4

SC.8.P.8.9 Distinguish among mixtures (including solutions) and pure substances. 5 Table of Contents: Solubility L.O. SWBAT determine what factors affect solubility.

6 Dilute Solution vs Concentrated Solution  dilute solution – mixture with only a little solute dissolved in the solvent.  concentrated solution – mixture with a lot of solute dissolved in the solvent.

7 Solubility The maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a specific amount of solvent usually 100 g. g of solute 100 g water

8 Saturated vs Unsaturated A saturated solution contains the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve. Un-dissolved solute remains. If you can continue to dissolve more solute in a solution then it is unsaturated.

Read Page 403 – Working with solubility 9

10 Apply your Knowledge At 40  C, the solubility of KBr is 80 g/100 g H 2 O. Indicate if the following solutions are (1) saturated or (2) unsaturated A. ___60 g KBr in 100 g of water at 40  C B. ___200 g KBr in 200 g of water at 40  C C. ___25 KBr in 50 g of water at 40  C 2 1 2

12 Affect of Temperature TemperatureSolubility(g/100 g H 2 O) CO 2 (g)O 2 (g) 0°C0.340.0070 20°C0.170.0043 50°C0.0760.0026 The solubility of most gases decreases with an increase in temperature.

13 Learning Check A. Why would a bottle of carbonated drink possibly burst (explode) when it is left out in the hot sun ? B. Why would fish die in water that gets too warm?

14 Answers A. Gas in the bottle builds up as the gas becomes less soluble in water at high temperatures, which may cause the bottle to explode. B. Because O 2 gas is less soluble in warm water, the fish may not obtain the needed amount of O 2 for their survival.

Read Page 404 – Factors Affecting Solubility 15

16 Summary Imagine you work for a bottling company and the cola your company produces keeps coming out flat. Write an e-mail to your boss describing changes you should make to have the ideal conditions for bottling fizzy cola. Use vocabulary words. (Pages 404-405) Solubility, pressure, solvent, temperature

Atomic Model - Review Packet– Due by the end of class Question: Can the atomic model explain patterns in nature? Claim: Elements in the same group have the same # of valence e –. As a result, elements in each group have similar properties. 17
