19 How has an issue about matters of life and death been presented in the media? Programme: Panorama ‘The Great Abortion Divide Channel: BBC1 Issue: Abortion Summary of programme: The Panorama Documentary ‘The Great Abortion Divide’ was a documentary with interviews with people who were Pro Choice and Pro Life. The programme dealt with the Abortion Law in the UK and focused on the issues of multiple abortions and the current 24 week time limit. How was the issue presented? The issue was presented to include the views of pro-life and pro-abortion groups, both religious and secular. Through interviews and real life case studies it explored the issue of the rights of an unborn child vs. the rights of the mother.

20 Was the programme fair to religious people and religious beliefs? Yes because… Roman Catholics believe abortion is murder and this was shown (people holding those signs whilst singing hymns). Evangelical Christians do believe life begins at conception and the Health Minister in the program said abortion was killing innocent children. One of the banners held whilst people were praying, read “Life is precious” and this is a Christian belief, as they believe life is a gift from God. No because… When the narrator spoke about the Law on abortion in Ireland (which is that abortion is not allowed even for rape ) and stated women had no choice, even when raped, it showed religious people praying, religious texts and teachings, and a religious cross. This could make the viewer think that religious people have no compassion A Pro-Life abortion group, ‘Abortion 67’ displayed graphic images of abortion. They were described as ‘religious nutcases’ despite being a secular organisation. (Stereotyping)
