Industry Organized economic activity concerned with manufacture, processing of raw materials, or construction (Collins Canadian Dictionary). Industrialization: The development of large-scale production as an important feature in the economic evolution of a country or system (Global Connections).

Sectors of Industry Primary sector:
Extraction of natural resources. E.g. farming, mining, fishing.

Industry Sectors Secondary sector:
Manufacture of raw materials from primary resources. E.g. food processing, textiles.

Industry Sectors Tertiary Sector: Sale and use of manufactured goods.
E.g. Wal-Mart.

Industry Sectors Quaternary:
Not linked to natural resources, but information services. E.g. call centres.

Group Work Choose an item on your person today. Analyse the item and identify the three or four sectors that brought this product to your hands. In groups of three, examine three new items – one item per person; take turns analysing; one person record. (Record who analysed each item). Last 15 min. of class: Present items to the other groups.
