Christmas Carol: The 12 Days of Christmas Christmas carol – traditional religious or popular song sung at Christmas 12 Days of Christmas: 12 day long festival celebrated in Europe in the Middle Ages ( 中世纪 ), from December 25 to January 6 Shakespeare wrote a comedy called Twelfth Night about the celebration on the last night of the festival

3. Conditional Statements: “If I had a million dollars…” If I had a million dollars,……. I would buy a house. (imaginary, unreal condition) If I/you/he/she/they (past tense)… I/you/he/she/they would (verb)… Examples: If you bought a new car, what kind would it be? If I bought a new car, it would be a Mercedes Benz. *If I were a rich man, I wouldn’t ride a bicycle. (“to be” is the exception – use “I were”, not “I was”)

4. If you could be any person in the world, who would you be? If you could change one thing about yourself, what would you change? If you had just 1 special power or ability (e.g. to be able to fly, or to become invisible, etc.), what would it be? If you were stuck on a deserted island, what would you bring?

5. Last Week’s Homework In pairs, take turns reading what you have written. After you are finished, change partners. Your classmates may ask you questions about what you have written. 1.If you had a million dollars (630 万 RMB), what would you do? Write 1 to 2 paragraphs, and practice reading it.

10. Conversation #6 Patrick: Good talking to you. Let’s get together soon. Judy: I’d love to. Patrick: Good. I’ll give you a call and we’ll set a date. Judy: If you want, we can set a date now. Patrick: Yeah, let’s do that. I’m free any evening next week. What about you? Judy: Wednesday evening is fine. Patrick Okay. Let’s make it Wednesday. Judy: Great. See you then.

15. Oral Exam Format Groups of 3 (or 4) students will be examined at the same time for 10 minutes Come only for the time that is given to you – please come on time Oral exam will have 3 parts: Part A – Jazz Chants and Tongue-twisters Part B – Autobiography Part C – Opinions and Descriptions

16. Part A: Reading (Jazz Chant, tongue twister) Each student will take turns reading a jazz chant and a tongue twister. Part B: Autobiography Each student is given a question to ask another student e.g. “What was your favourite book when you were young?” (past tense) e.g. “What do you hope to do after you graduate?” (future tense) e.g. “What do you usually eat for breakfast?” (present tense) e.g. “I hope you don’t mind my asking, but have you ever…?” (polite question). The student who answers the question is then given a different question to ask the next student, and so on.

17. Part C: Opinions, Describing things Each student is given an opinion question to ask another student - “If I had a million dollars….?” (conditional), “Pardon me, what do you think of..?” (polite questions). Each student will be asked to describe something – an object in the room, what another student is wearing, a member of their family (family, occupations), their hometown.
