5. Reasons Nativists opposed Immigration
1. Willing to work for low pay
2. They spoke different languages

6. Chinese Exclusion Act
Law passed by Congress – under it no Chinese laborer could enter the U.S.
No Chinese living in the U.S. could return once they left the country.

Did not understand Chinese customs.
Chinese were not willing to assimilate
Many planned to save $ and leave
