Lou Henry Hoover

Lou Henry Hoover was born in Waterloo, Iowa on March 29, 1874. Her mother was Florence Weed Henry. Her father was Charles D. Henry.

Lou loved nature and spent as much time outdoors as she could, both as a child and as an adult.

Lou enjoyed sketching people and places wherever she went.

Lou received a teaching certificate from San Jose Normal School and a degree in geology from Stanford University.

Lou was the first woman to receive a degree in geology from Stanford University.

Starting a new life in China Lou and Bert were married on February 10, 1899 and the very next day boarded a ship for China.

Lou’s letters home told of her adventures in China. Interspersed in Lou’s letters you see drawings and Chinese characters that she added to help explain the Chinese culture to her family.

Lou and Bert had two sons: Allan & Herbert

Mr. & Mrs. Hoover were World Travelers. It is said that Bert and Lou traveled around the world five times before their oldest son turned eight years old.

Lou chose a life of service helping wherever she could, whether feeding children throughout the world or organizing the Girl Scouts.
