2 General Info Location: between Syria and Greece, bodies of water on three sides. Population: 78,785,548 70% urban Government: Republic Capital: Ankara Language: Turkish Religion: Muslim Literacy rate: male 95% female 79% Currency: lira

3 History During WWI the Ottoman Empire collapsed. Modern Turkey was founded in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal(Ataturk) He was the first president of Turkey’s Republic. Kemal moved the capital from Istanbul to Ankara.

4 Istanbul Biggest city in Turkey The old capital Located on two continents Europe & Asia. The body of water between the two sides is the Bosporus Strait. Used to be called Constantinople.

5 Current Events Twenty four soldiers were killed and eighteen were injured on Wednesday. Rockets were fired at military sites to protest democratic improvements. It is believed that a Kurdish reform group was behind the attacks. Over 100 people were arrested. The U.S. says it will support Turkey with the battles against terrorism.

6 Current Events Turkey has been trying to join the European Union. European nations criticize the way people are treated in the capital. The Turkish government believes that Europe is being narrow minded. The debate has gone on for so long that Turkey has almost given up hope.

7 Turkish Foods None of the food found in Turkey contains pork. Shish kabob: shish=skewer kabob=meat Pide: flat bread eaten during Ramadan Simit:sesame seed ring Lokum: candy Turkish Delight Baklava: dessert

8 Tulips Most people believe tulips came from Holland. Tulips came into Europe in 1559. They were imported into Belgium a few years later. The Dutch thought they could be used for food and medicine. Tulips were only eaten during WW II

9 Tulips 1700-1730 was known as the Tulip Period. Tulip patterns on everything Tulips symbolized nobility and privilege. Gardening was thought of as relaxing. Turkish name for tulips: lale. English name comes from turban.
