Memories of a sharecropper Interview subjects recall their lives in the South as members of sharecropping families. Sharecropping was a system by which landowners rented land to farmers in exchange for a percentage of their crop. The Reconstruction Amendments 13 th,14 th, 15th 1864 – before southern stated could be re- admitted to the Union, they had to accept (ratify) these amendments. 13 th – Abolishes Slavery 14 th –Grants citizenship to all former slaves, referred to as “ freedmen” 15 th – grants voting rights, regardless of race ( to males only)

Black Codes and Jim Crow laws Some examples of Jim Crow laws are the segregation of public schools, public places and public transportation, and the segregation of restrooms and restaurants for whites and blacks.
