Domain Eukarya Plant Kingdom

Traits of Plants: ♣ Multicellular, photosynthetic, eukaryotes ♣ Waxy cuticle to prevent water loss ♣ Stomata (openings on underside of leaf)

Traits of Plants: Egg/embryo develops inside female gametangium Land plants evolved from charophytes (green algae)

Divisions of plant kingdom: 1.Division Bryophyta Traits: –no vascular tissue, tiny sperm swim to egg –Live where it is wet.

Division Bryophyta (cont): –Example: moss –Dominant generation is gametophyte –Be able to draw & label life cycle of moss.

2.Division Tracheophyta Traits: vascular plants with xylem & phloem Types of Tracheophytes: a) seedless plants example: fern Dominant generation is sporophyte.

Types of Tracheophytes: b.)Seed plants Types of seed plants: 1) Gymnosperms (naked seed plants) ex: conifers (cone bearing) Traits: leaves are needle- like. They have two kinds of cones (male & female)

Gymnosperms (cont): Dominant generation is sporophyte. Male gametophyte: pollen grain Female gametophyte: part of ovule in female cone

Male gametophyte produces sperm. Female gametophyte produces egg. Where does fertilization happen? in female gametophyte, in ovule What is produced from zygote? Embryo within a seed

Tracheophytes (cont): Types of seed plants cont. 2)Angiosperms (flowering plants) Traits: leaves are flat & broad. Vascular tissue is thicker than in Gymnosperms. Dominant generation is sporophyte.

fema le ma le Be able to draw a flower and label all parts

How and where do seeds form? Ovule, found in ovary of flower, becomes the seed. It contains the egg. What is the function of fruit? Dispersal of seeds What does fruit develop from? ovary of flower

Define: Sporophyte- diploid (2n) part of life cycle that makes haploid (n) spores by meiosis Gametophyte- haploid (n) stage of the life cycle that makes gametes by mitosis.
