FINANCE - A Workforce Strategy for a High Performance Culture Delivering excellence, Engendering trust, Stimulating Innovation, Exemplifying leadership. 1

Overview The Workforce Strategy is all about setting up Finance for the future. It’s a future that we have identified in our Business Plan, through a journey that has already commenced. One that will see Finance adopt a best practice approach and act as a fundamental enabler for the delivery of the UNSW 2025 strategy. The Workforce Strategy formally activates the principles contained in our Business Plan by aligning specific strategies, practices and programs with a comprehensive ‘how to guide’ that we will all need to follow if we are to deliver our collective objectives. It will be important that Directors and Managers take ownership of the strategy and provide leadership that encourages all staff to embrace and follow the plans and activities outlined. I would like to acknowledge the work done by Chris Carbert and Catrine Larsson who have championed this project and I look forward to all of Finance working together to make the Workforce Strategy a success. 2 Stephen Rees Director of Finance WORKFORCE STRATEGY

Introduction This Workforce Strategy has been designed to help Finance continue a pathway to a High Performance Culture that underpins the goals of Finance, while supporting UNSW to achieve its broader 2025 Strategy. In the context of current and future environments it focuses on a number of core initiatives designed to attract, enable, develop and engage management and staff, while addressing and responding to organisation, individual and team performances. It emphasises the need to demonstrate leadership, embrace learning and development and exhibit core values and behaviours. It identifies re-skilling and performance development strategies that will enable Finance to meet future requirements and attract long term relationships within and beyond their Finance teams. It promotes a customer focus that utilises engagement strategies and organisation efficiencies that achieve desired outcomes. In summary, the Workforce Strategy is all about creating a High Performance Culture that delivers excellence, engenders trust, stimulates innovation and exemplifies leadership through a people-driven, people-owned and people-rewarded approach. Current and Future Environments Introduction Current and Future Environments Strategic Themes Workforce Programs Objectives Summarising the Future of Finance A Blueprint to Create a High Performance Culture The skills that led us to where we are now will not be sufficient going into the future. The workforce strategy enables the identification of skill gaps and builds the capabilities needed for the future. The role of the Finance function is changing and performance standards will continue to grow. The skills that led us to where we are now will not be sufficient going into the future. To be successful Finance will need to prepare for increasing and competing demands and challenges. At times, this will mean moving out of comfort zones and developing a high level of resilience to remain committed to the achievement of business objectives in the face of setbacks and challenges. This is something we recognised some time ago and since commencing the journey we have made significant progress. Our aim is to further develop an agile and robust workforce that is flexible and responsive. This will challenge us to continually draw on our strengths, but also to critically examine where we are now and where we want to be. With change presenting an opportunity not a threat, success will depend on our ability to adapt, evolve and embrace change. 4 FINANCE
