Partial Quotient Method In this division algorithm the children record on the right side of the problem. The first thing they do is divide. They ask themselves how many 12’s can go into 158? Then they choose a multiple of ten that when multiplied by 12 gets as close to 158 without going over. This student chose 10.
2
Next the student Multiplies 10 times 12 (the divisor) and records the product (120) under the dividend.
3
The next step is to subtract. When they subtract 120 from 158 they get a difference of 38.
4
Now they repeat the first step and divide. They ask themselves how many 12’s can go into 38?
5
The student knows that three 12’s can go into 38 so they write a 3 to the right of the problem under the 10 being sure to place it in the correct place value column.
6
Multiply 3 times 12 and the product is 36. Place the 36 under the 38 and subtract. The difference is two.
7
Since we have a difference of two we know that we are done because the remainder is smaller than the divisor. Now we add up the numbers on the right hand side (10 +3=13). So the quotient for 158/12 is 13 with a remainder of 2.
