5 President Diem enforced a ban on flying the Buddhist Flag on Wesak, the birthday of Buddha. Just days before, Roman Catholics had been allowed to fly their flag at a celebration. A large crowd of Buddhists protested against the ban. Government forces fired into the crowd of protesters, killing nine people. “Before closing my eyes and moving towards the vision of the Buddha, I respectfully plead to President Diem to take a mind of compassion towards the people of the nation and implement religious equality to maintain the strength of the homeland eternally. In 1959, the Tibetan Buddhist leader (Dalai Lama) ordered a peaceful protest in the streets demanding an end to Chinese rule. In response to this protest, Chinese troops killed thousands of Tibet protesters. The Chinese government banned the Dalai Lama from Tibet (he is now in exile). He can only return if he promises not to protest against China. The Dalai Lama has been in exile for 50 years and has still not returned back to Tibet. Since 1959, Chinese troops have violently killed many Buddhist Tibetans who have peacefully protested against them. The Dalai Lama has ordered that no guns or weapons is to be used by the Tibetan’s as it goes against the Buddhist teachings. 14 Female Suicide Bomber During the Lebanese Civil War, Sana’a Mehaidli blew herself up at the age of 17. She is believed to have been the first female suicide bomber and is known as "the Bride of the South". "I am very comfortable with carrying out this operation. I choose to do this because I am fulfilling my duty towards my land and my people. Mother, you taught me to love, to sacrifice and to show respect. Now I am loving my country, sacrificing my life and respecting the people of the south." Islam views suicide as one of the greatest sins to one's spiritual journey. A verse in the Quran instructs; "And do not kill yourselves, surely God is most Merciful to you." (4:29)
