3 SBA COMPONENT (1) This consists of a reading/viewing programme where students need to : read/view four texts over the course of two years one from each category: print fiction, print non- fiction, non-print fiction, non-print non-fiction write up comments/personal reflections take part in discussions with classmates on what they have read/viewed make an individual presentation on the texts they have read/viewed and respond to their teacher’s questions

4 SBA COMPONENT (2) List of recommended texts provided Texts of a range of difficulty levels Texts on different topics Teachers/students can choose a minimum of two texts from the recommended list and use two other appropriate texts of their own choice

5 SBA COMPONENT (3) Assessment based on the student’s oral performance The reading / viewing / writing only serve as the means to an end, so not assessed Guidelines on implementation, sample assessment tasks, assessment criteria and samples of performance will be provided

6 SBA COMPONENT (4) Teachers need to report one mark at the end of S4 (out of 24, 5% of subject) and two marks at the end of S5 (each out of 24, 10% of subject) The SBA marks awarded by teachers will be moderated statistically, using the public exam marks as reference The SBA marks will be combined with the oral exam marks and reported together as a speaking level

7 RATIONALE FOR INTRODUCING SBA Less reliance on a ‘one-off’ public exam Improves validity of oral English assessment Improve reliability of oral English assessment Beneficial backwash on teaching and learning Professional development for teachers which empowers them to become part of the assessment process

8 TRAINING AND SUPPORT Training will be provided to familiarise teachers with the SBA format and assessment criteria and standards SBA coordinator in each school to coordinate activities and to liaise with HKEAA Continuous support provided in the form of school groups headed by group coordinators Meetings for professional development and experience-sharing will be arranged

11 SBA SUPPORT MATERIALS (3) Training CD-ROM covering: Assessment Criteria Samples of a full range of student performances on different task types Booklet containing: Assessment Criteria Grades of sample students with commentary and explanatory notes Guidance notes for SBA coordinators on quality assurance and running standardization sessions with peer teachers

12 SBA SUPPORT STRUCTURE S4 English teachers (~1800) School SBA coordinators (~630) Group coordinators each in charge of 15-25 schools (~35) SBA Supervisor Subject Officer Advisory Committee comprising SBA consultants, CDI officers and HKEAA officers

13 ROLE OF SBA COORDINATORS The SBA coordinator, nominated by the principal, will carry out the following duties in consultation with other S4 English teachers: review the list of recommended texts select suitable texts for students’ SBA programme select / develop suitable SBA assessment tasks plan assessment schedule ensure proper understanding of the assessment criteria coordinate and standardize the assessment process coordinate the reporting of marks to the HKEAA at the end of S4 liaise with the group coordinator and the HKEAA

14 SBA TRAINING For SBA coordinators: Implementation issues – 4 /5 /6 July (3 hours) Assessment criteria, quality assurance and standardization – late September (3 hours) For all S4 teachers: Assessment criteria and standards – October (3 hours)
