2  A large number of non training “Fellowship” posts have been available for several years (Pre and post CCT)  The DOH funded 70 Post CCT Fellowship posts in 2007 to release training numbers to deal with the ST3 bulge associated with MMC  Several specialties have Deanery funded interface posts eg Hand Fellowships (Pre CCT)

3  Several surgical specialty curricula produce “generalists” without (many) subspecialist skills  Fellowship training (with acquisition of subspecialist skills) is increasingly a requirement for consultant posts in several specialties  Fellowship training is currently unregulated

4  In 2009, RCS Council agreed proposals to develop a National Surgical Fellowship scheme  In 2010, a cross specialty group was established (including representatives of the Specialty Associations) to oversee the institution of this programme  In 2011, RCS Council approved proposals for quality assurance of Fellowship posts

5  Develop a register of Fellowship posts  Develop quality assurance processes for these posts  Develop processes for trainee assessment  Manpower planning  Lobby for central funding

6 1. Employing Trust applies to RCS England 2. QA Department coordinates assessment of the post by SAC and Specialty Association 3. If successful, approval given, subject to review for a period of up to 5 years 4. Annual review via online trainee evaluation and logbooks

7  Provides a structured educational experience prior to or immediately after CCT  Is designed to deliver the requirements of a subspecialty which is not readily available within CCT training  Has an established curriculum  Does not impinge on the training of pre-CCT trainees  Allied to workforce opportunities in the specialty

8  Senior Trainees (OOPT)  CCT holders wishing to obtain additional expertise  Newly appointed consultants wishing to obtain additional skills  Existing Consultants wishing to learn new skills

9  Advertise the post with the College Eagle motif and strap line;  “This fellowship post has been approved by the Royal College of Surgeons and the …… specialty association”  Listing on the College website
