2
Types of Reactions Single Displacement Double Displacement Combination Combustion Decomposition
3
Single Displacement A chemical reaction whereby a free element substitutes for another element in a compound. In this type of reaction, displacement normally occurs when A is more reactive than B Generic Formula: A + BX AX + B A + BX B + AX A + BX X + AB (or BA)
4
Single Displacement
5
Examples: Mg + 2HCl MgCl 2 + H 2 Cu + AgNO 3 Ag + CuNO 3 Cl 2 + CH 4 4H + CCl 2
6
Double Displacement When two or more reactants form one product which is either a solid compound or a molecular compound Generic Formula: AX + BY AY + BX
7
Double Displacement
8
Examples: Ag NO 3 + NaCl AgCl + NaNO 3 Pb(NO 3 ) 2 + 2 KI PbI 2 + 2 KNO 3
9
Combination A chemical reaction where one compound is formed from two elements and/or compounds Generic Formula: A + B AB
10
Combination
11
Combination Examples: 8 Fe + S 8 8 FeS CaO + CO 2 CaCO 3
12
Decomposition A chemical reaction where one compound decomposes into two or more elements and/or compounds Generic Formula: AB A + B
13
Decomposition Examples: 2H 2 O O 2 + 2H 2 O H 2 CO 3 H 2 O + C0 2
14
Combustion A chemical reaction of an element or compound with oxygen Combustion normally is with a flame Generic Formula: Carbon-Hydrogen Compound Carbon Dioxide + Water
15
Combustion When carbon-hydrogen compounds go through combustion with an excess of oxygen, the products are carbon dioxide and water When these compounds go through combustion with less oxygen, the products can also be carbon monoxide
16
Combustion Example: With an excess of oxygen… CH 4 + 2O 2 CO 2 + 2H 2 O
17
Combustion Example: With less oxygen needed… 2C 8 H 18 + 17O 2 16CO + 18H 2 O
