1 Circulatory System Part 2: Blood Vessels Created by: Abby Mire
Grades 4-8 Part 2: Blood Vessels Circulatory System

2 Learning Targets I can describe blood vessels.
I can describe blood vessel dilation. I can describe blood vessel constriction. I can explain what blood vessels do when my body temperature gets high. I can explain what blood vessels do when my body temperature gets low. I can name a structure veins have that arteries do not. I can explain why veins have valves. I can describe arteries. I can describe arterioles. I can describe veins. I can describe venules. I can describe capillaries. I can explain the statement “The circulatory system is basically 2 loops.”

3 Vocabulary Blood Vessels Dilate Constrict Artery Vein Valve Arteriole
Venule Capillary Pulmonary

4 Blood Vessels These are elastic! They get bigger and smaller…
Vessels getting bigger = dilating Vessels getting smaller = constricting

5 Activity: Blood vessels getting bigger is called dilating
Activity: Blood vessels getting bigger is called dilating. Blood vessels getting smaller is called constricting.

6 Your blood vessels help you out when you are hot and when you are cold!

7 If you are hot… Your blood vessels get bigger (vasodilation). They move closer to the epidermis and release heat. This cools you off!

8 If you are Cold… Your blood vessels get smaller (vasoconstriction). They move farther away from the epidermis and keep heat in. This warms you up!

9 2 Types of Blood Vessels Veins Arteries Next page… what structure do veins have that arteries do not?

10 What structure do veins have that arteries do not?

11 You will watch a video on valves in your veins
You will watch a video on valves in your veins. Then you will explain the purpose of those valves. Coming Up…

13 Open-ended… Explain the purpose of valves in our veins.

14 Arteries Arteries - blood vessel that leads blood away from the heart
Arterioles – arteries start branching into smaller vessels called arterioles

15 Veins Vein - Blood vessel that leads blood towards the heart
Venules – veins start branching into smaller vessels called venules arterioles Veins

16 Where arterioles turn in to venules Smallest blood vessels
Only big enough for 1 erythrocyte to get through at a time Diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide occur here Capillaries

17 You will watch a video to review the 3 main types of blood vessels
You will watch a video to review the 3 main types of blood vessels. Listen for any new information you haven’t heard or seen so far. Coming Up…

19 2 Loops Your circulatory system is basically 2 loops: Pulmonary Loop:
This loop goes from your heart to your lungs and back to your heart again Systemic Loop: The second loop goes from your heart to some place in the body (muscle, eyeball, big toe…) and back to your heart again

20 Quiz What do blood vessels do when a human is cold?
What are blood vessels going to do to try to get rid of heat when a person is too hot? Which type of vessel takes blood from the heart to the finger? Which type of vessel takes blood from the lung to the heart? Where does diffusion of the oxygen and carbon dioxide happen in the blood vessel?

21 I love creating interactive lessons that educators can use to inspire their students’ learning! I hope you found this lesson helpful in engaging all of your learners. Thank You! Abby
