2 A Study of Colonial America 1607-1776 A quarter-long cross curricular research project and oral presentation in Social Studies and English

3 What is the Goal? Empower students Give students the opportunity to explore a topic of their choosing in depth Expose student to the formal research process Improve oral presentation skills Hold students accountable for their learning

4 How is the Quarter Organized? January: Focused on topic research in Social Studies February: Focused on research paper and presentation in English

5 Elements to be assessed in Social Studies Information gathered from reading Note taking Summary writing Meeting deadlines

6 Elements to be assessed in English 5 paragraph research paper Thesis driven done entirely at school MLA formatting Bibliography (NOT Works Cited) done at home easybib.com

7 Elements to be assessed during the presentation Creation of a presentation board done at home by the student 5 min. oral presentation This should not be a memorized speech but more a ‘talk’ or knowledgeable presentation with the use of the visual aid to guide the presentation. Question and Answer

8 Life Skills Research Practice  Defining plagiarism  Determining the credibility of Internet articles  Using the Phoenix Public Library’s website to preview books, place books on hold, and access research through online scholarly databases  Paraphrasing  Creating research note cards in the same format as used for 3 rd Quarter Presentations  Writing a bibliography using MLA format

9 Parent Tasks part 1 Starting today: $3 for presentation supplies Mid-December: sign and return student topic selection form Mid-January: sign up on-line for a day and time for your student’s presentation Students need to be at school on time unless they are sick or injured Help provide necessary resources early in the quarter Attend the presentation

10 Parent tasks part 2 Necessary resources Students will need access to a computer, the internet, and a printer daily Stock an extra ink cartridge! Tri-fold board Construction paper Glue stick or rubber cement Straight edge cutter recommended Help students find books, articles, videos about their topic for this grade level

11 Other ways parents can help! Ask your student about their topic! Encourage them to look for resources from the children’s section of the Library or other sources for young people Listen to your student practice the 5 min. oral presentation Ask your student questions about what they presented to prepare for the Q&A portion of the presentation Allow the student to decide what changes need to be made Please allow students to take full ownership of this project. They will AMAZE you!

12 What happens during Presentation Week?  Students only attend for their personal appointed time  with at least one family member  Exceptions are made only for a death in the family or hospitalization  NO regularly scheduled classes occur this week.

13 When is Presentation Week? Presentations are held from Monday March 7 to Friday March 11

14 What happens during the Presentation?  Students come to their appointment neatly dressed in concert black with presentation board  Child orally presents research to a panel of teachers and at least one family member  Question and Answer- 3-5 minutes of questions from the faculty panel members to allow students to expand on points made, explain the creation of their board, go deeper into their subject area  Authentic oral feedback is provided by the faculty members.  Students will receive their rubric for their oral presentation the first day they have English after Spring Break

15 Common questions:  When will students get more information on the presentation requirements?  A packet will go home with students the first day of class after winter break.

16  Will students have the opportunity to practice their presentation at school before Presentation Week?  Yes, students will practice the presentation in class and get written feedback on both the presentation and the board.

17  How many resources will my student need?  Students are required to have 5 resources. Most students will need to look through and select from many resources to find the best information, possibly as many as 30. They will then select the best ones to use for their presentation.

18  Will students have other homework while preparing for their presentation?  Yes, there will normal homework for most classes. If your student seems to have a lot of work, please let us know so we can evaluate and adjust if needed.
