Chapter 3 Interpreting Remainders 6.C.1.a Multiply whole numbers 6.C.1.b Divide whole numbers 6.C.1.c Interpret quotients and remainders mathematically and in the context of a problem 3.A.1.a Use technology tools, including software and hardware, from a range of teacher-selected options to learn new content or reinforce skills.

Interpreting the remainder:  Sometimes only use the quotient and ignore the remainder.  Sometimes the remainder is part of the answer.  Sometimes you add 1 to the quotient.

A total of 125 fifth graders will travel to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and Aquarium. If each bus holds 42 students, how many buses will be needed? 1234567891011121314151617181920 212223242526272829303132 a.2 b.3 c.4 d.2 R41

The 125 students will be placed in groups for the trip. If each chaperone has 6 students, how many students would be in the last group? a.20 b.21 c.6 d.5 1234567891011121314151617181920 212223242526272829303132

Each picnic table at the Inner Harbor seats 8 people. How many tables will the 125 students need if they all eat at the same time? a.15 R5 b.15 c.16 d.5 1234567891011121314151617181920 212223242526272829303132

Once in the Aquarium, only 15 students may enter the Dolphin Show at a time. How many groups will need to be formed if all 125 students want to see the show? a.9 b.8 R5 c.8 d.5 1234567891011121314151617181920 212223242526272829303132

Once back at school, students will give presentations about assigned exhibits. If each of the 125 students speak for 9 minutes, how many presentations will there be each day? (Hint: 7 hours = 420 minutes) a.46 R6 b.46 c.47 d.6 1234567891011121314151617181920 212223242526272829303132

A total of 17 pictures from the trip will be placed in the school yearbook. If 4 pictures fit onto one page, how many pages will be needed to include all of the pictures? 1234567891011121314151617181920 212223242526272829303132 a.1 b.4 R1 c.4 d.5

When you solve a problem with a remainder, you… 1234567891011121314151617181920 212223242526272829303132 a.always ignore the remainder b.do not use the remainder c.sometimes add 1 to the quotient d.estimate the answer
