1 Unique Cultural Groups, Women and Minority Groups Learning Goal 4: Identify examples of cultures that maintain traditional cultural patterns and compare the economic, social or political opportunities for women, ethnic and religious minorities and underrepresented populations in different cultures. 2 Traditional Life for Profit Imas “Traditional” Village Papua New Guinea Residents live, dress and behave as they did in the past Residents re-creating the past for tourists is helping the Imas people preserve both their language, known as Karam, and their culture. ***Village women line up souvenirs to sell.

3 Tanzania's Albinos Face Constant Threat Of Attack More than 100 albinos have been violently attacked in Tanzania from 2006 to June of this year – 71 died and 31 escaped In order to protect these people the government has opened boarding schools for albino children Some minorities require government protection due to cultural superstitions/ beliefs

4 Some nations restrict women through law Example- India (some states) doesn’t require women to follow helmet rules on the road so as to preserve women’s hair and makeup. Vatican City-women not allowed to vote Example- Saudi Arabia women limited on contact with men outside of their family. Some businesses have separate rooms for male and female employees. Women banned from driving in Saudi Arabia. ***Participation in the workforce is lowest in the world. 5 In the U.S., a Gender Pay Gap Despite tremendous gains in education in the past century, in the US, women still make 82 percent of what their male counterparts make, according to most recent estimates. The wage gap persists at all level of educations and races. Women earn less in part because they tend to go into lower-paid fields. However, even when comparing women and men in the same fields, women still make 7 percent less than their male counterparts. The U.S. is just one of the many countries where a gender pay gap exists.women still make 82 percent of what their male counterparts the many countries
