2 Overview 100,000 slaves were brought to freedom between 1810 and 1850
It was named the Underground Railroad because of the new steam engines They used railroad words like “station,” “depot,” and “stationmaster” to help keep the slaves safe

3 Famous People of the Underground Railroad
Harriet Tubman Born into slavery Ran away from slavery at age 25 She helped free about 300 slaves through the underground railroad

4 Famous people of the Underground Railroad
Levi Coffin Helped 3,300 slaves escape to freedom He and his wife Catherine were Quakers His house was called “Grand Central Station”

5 Famous people of the Underground Railroad
Susan B. Anthony Born on February 15, 1820 Worked on the Underground Railroad Worked to get women to have the right to vote

6 How it worked Stations were about 20 miles apart.
Conductors used wagons and carts with false bottoms to help slaves get from station to station Slaves usually traveled at night and hid during the day
