4. Childhood  Born on January 22, 1822  He and his family were slaves  His mother Phobe hoped Barney would escape slavery

5. Becoming an Adult  Escaped slavery when he was 17 years of age using the Underground Railroad  Married Julia Lyon in Chicago, Illinois  Didn’t have a last name and got one from the boat Lancelot Ford  Became successful from gold and became wealthy

6. Senior Years  Helped slaves escape to get an education  Built a home in Breckenridge, Colorado and settled there  Three years after wife’s death in 1899, Barney died of a stroke on December 22, 1902
