General Election 2010 What the Parties Say – Making Government Better
2
The Conservative Party – Making Government Better Get rid of the Human Rights Act and have a British Bill of Rights. Make sure that every person over 18 has to register to vote. Give non-English MPs less of a say on England-only laws. Voters should be allowed to remove MPs if they have done something wrong. People who have worked for the Government should not be allowed to use what they know for to make money for at least 2 years. Cut the number of MPs by 10%. Force Parliament to talk about something if enough MPs ask for it. Make all areas which have an MP the same in population size. Do not change the system of voting. Stop the Government having too many people in to advise them. Allow people to vote for most of the members of the House of Lords. Allow the Scottish Parliament to make taxes and the Welsh Assembly to make laws.
3
The Labour Party – Making Government Better Have changed Government for the better more than any Government in many years. Would have a vote on making the voting system fairer by October 2011. Replace the Human Rights Act with a British Bill of Rights. Let the Scottish Parliament collects taxes and the Welsh Assembly make laws. Not allow rich people to give too much money to political parties. Put limits on the amount that political parties are allowed to spend on elections.
4
The Liberal Democrats – Making Government Better The rules of how Britain is ruled would be written down (and people would vote on if they agreed to it or not). This would say what the Government can and cannot do and there should be a Bill of Rights saying what rights we have. Introduce a fairer voting system. Replace House of Lords with another body voted for by the people. Let the Scottish Parliament collect taxes and the for Welsh Assembly make laws. Cut the number of MPs by 150; Cut the number of ministers. Allow different parts of England have regional assemblies (like the Greater London Assembly) if people vote for them. Not let people give too much money to political parties. Not let political parties spend too much money. Give 16-year-olds the right to vote and stand for election; Make Parliament talk about things which the people want them to talk about. Make it so that there MUST be a General Election every 4 years.
5
The Green Party – Making Government Better Not allow rich people to give money to political parties. Make the way voters registered better. Not allow election posters. Strictly control the money spent on elections.
6
UKIP – Making Government Better Allow voters to decide on important things if 5% or more of the population ask for the right to. Support a House of Lords made up of 200 elected and 100 appointed members, plus bishops and law-lords. Get rid of the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies. Replace them with bodies made up of MPs from those nations. Allow English MPs to meet for one week every month to consider England-only laws. Give most powers back to the House of Commons. Keep the way that we vote for MPs the same. Give parliament more powers.
