Paper 1: Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation Close Reading Preparation: Revise Literary Techniques and their general effects: similes/metaphors/personification/punctuation marks etc. Revise approaches to types of questions: Understanding/analysis (word choice, imagery, sentence structure)/Evaluation (effectiveness of title/conclusion) Read and Complete Practice Papers

Paper 2: Critical Reading Part A: Scottish Text Familiarise yourself with the main ideas/themes in the 6 poems Review annotation of techniques used in poems and effects they have Learn/memorise examples of techniques used in a range of poems (for comparison) Revise summary sheet – look at links between poems Create Mind-maps for each of the poems based on revision table Write comparisons of two poems (in line with final 8 mark question looking at similarities/differences in themes and how conveyed through techniques) Revise suggested structure/approach for final 8 mark question Do Practice Questions

Paper 2: Critical Reading Part B: Critical Essay Familiarise yourself with the main ideas/themes/message in ‘Stone Cold’ Make sure you know key details of text for introduction (narrative/characters/setting/plot events etc) Revise Key analytical techniques and points – use revision guide Rewrite revision guide in another format, condensing information e.g. Mind-map/table form Identify and memorise a range of quotations (4-5) which are evidence of key ideas/techniques Practise introducing, integrating and analysing these quotations Practise writing example introductions/conclusions Practise essay planning based around a task (Past/Example Tasks) Review Critical Essay guidance sheet – rewrite as notes on key hints/tips/points to remember in essay writing

Key Points for Exam Paper 1 = 1 hour (Close Reading) - Read passage and answer Qs (30 marks) Paper 2 = 1 hour 30 minutes (Jackie Kay & Critical Essay) - 45 minutes each section - Jackie Kay = 1 poem in paper (3-4 Qs) Compare with another poem (8 mark Q) 20marks in total - Critical Essay = PROSE FICTION Q choice - Answer ONE question (write one critical essay on ‘Stone Cold’) - Do quick plan & put a line through at end Write all Q numbers in margin and take a new page for critical essay after Jackie Kay answers – Remember name and teacher name on top of each sheet
