What are they? A polyatomic ion is a charged ion made of of two or more atoms bonded covalently. t

How to name them The names or formulas for polyatomic ions will usually be given to you in class. Your job is to recognize these when they are given. In the names of the formulas, look for prefixes such as “hypo” and “per”, and suffixes such as “ate” and “ite”. The sheet given out in class contains a list of some common polyatomic ions. t t t

What are they? A Ternary Compound is simply a compound composed of 3 or more elements. Ex: Sodium Chlorate NaClO3.

How to name them A Ternary compound is usually a positively charged metal ionically combined with a negative polyatomic ion. The first step is to name both the first element and the polyatomic ion being combined with it. After that you just combine the two names like any other ionic compound. The name of the polyatomic ion does not change..

Name to Formula Sodium Chlorate The formula for the chlorate ion is ClO 3 - and Sodium ion is Na +. Combined, the formula would look like this; NaClO 3 Berylluim Bromate Bromate is BrO 3 3- and the beryllium ion is Be 2 + The charges do not balance out therefore subscripts must be used to balance the charges. The formula would be; Be 3 (BrO 3 ) 2 Potassium Nitrate The Nitrate polyatomic ion is NO 3 - and the potassium ion is K + When the two ions are combined the formula looks like; KNO 3

Formula to Name NaClO 3 The polyatomic ion is recognized by looking at the table in your text book/the internet. (ClO 3 ) is the chlorate ion, and it has a charge of negative one. Na is the symbol for sodium. In the name and the formula the positive ion is stated first, so the name of NaClO 3 would be Sodium Chlorate. Be 3 (BrO 3 ) 2 BrO 3 is the bromate ion. It has a charge of negative three. The beryllium ion has a charge of positive 2. Beryllium is stated first, making the name of the compound Beryllium Bromate. KNO 3 NO 3 is the formula for the nitrate ion, which has a charge of negative one. The potassium ion has a charge of positive one, so it is written first. The name for KNO 3 is Potassium Nitrate.
