Rich Resources for Parents

Reading Eggs www.readingeggs.com

If you do not have home computer access The Cielo Vista lab is open Monday through Thursday for 45 minutes after school. Students work on Study Island, take AR tests and now READING EGGS! Computers are also available at the Library with a library card and the Community Center.

2 nd Grade Parents Find a balance between AR, Study Island and Reading Eggs/Express to support your child’s learning. Work with your teacher to find what works for your child.

Reading Eggs is Successful because 1.It is researched based. 2.Edutopia (Bill Gates Educational Foundation) has long stated that we must go to where the students “live”. This is their world. 3. Reading Eggs allows children to repeat skills until they master it. That is the format they best know in gaming. They love it! 4.Reading Eggs is highly rewarding and great fun! 5.PS: This is how we used to learn….lots of text! (not so much fun)

Now comes………..Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs Eggsperience I asked my mentor how best to teach Eggs to the students and he said, “Get an avatar and get them in there.”

That Worked! So Let’s Go Every child takes a comprehension test of 40 questions. They range from letter recognition to sentences. That places them on their personal map of lessons to begin.

Once The Test is Over Your avatar lands on the lesson where you will start ! Let’s get going. Lessons allow repetition for learning.

Ten Lessons: That’s all it takes After completing lessons your child is given a book they read with the program. When lessons are completed they result in GOLDEN EGGS! Golden eggs can be stored [(JN) has over 2500] or you can buy “stuff” from Reggie’s Shop for your home [(LB) has a couch and bunk beds], or pick a pet, or go to the Arcade.

What is with the boys and those blue couches?

Students Return to Lessons Students return to lessons to earn more Golden Eggs and so it goes. Some children are reporting to their teachers 2 hours of Reading Eggs in one night - replacing Bash and Crash gameware.

Let’s Look at Reading Eggs For this discussion I am using the PPT pictures because each login is tied to that child’s performance. Once in I could not jump from one to another to demonstrate differing levels.

Reading Express After two years of developing in Reading Eggs, students wanted to continue, but where? Students who are reading above grade level may be chosen to enter Reading Express. Reading Express provides lessons for the higher reading child. There are zones that define various activities.

You Can Go Back and Look

In addition to my outfit (over 300 eggs) there are pets and so much more to buy at the Mall or decorate your apartment!

Reminders to Parents DON’T do the work for your child. Reading Eggs will fill the gaps in learning. Think about structuring your child to earn non academic computer time by working in Study Island or Reading Eggs. (My formula 1 hour work =30 minutes play) Reward your children for taking the time and effort to work on these programs. Your excitement is catching!

You are the lucky ones. Eggs is a great program. Don’t help, that is not helping. Reward your student with your enthusiasm, pride, and get caught bragging about your child. Dr. Petersen will also be providing GOLDEN REWARDS! Keep in touch. If you have questions, or concerns drop in the lab or talk to your teacher.
