Federalism What is it, and is it still important today?

Federalism: a system of government in which a written constitution divides the powers of government between a national/federal government and smaller state/provincial governments

In the U.S., the federal government has four different sets of powers

Expressed An expressed power is a power given to the federal government by the Constitution

Implied An implied power is a power given to the federal government by the necessary and proper clause of the Constitution.

Inherent Inherent powers are powers the government has because the U.S. exists.

Reserved Reserved powers are powers given solely to the states

Supremacy Clause “This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States…shall be supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any state to the Contrary notwithstanding.” Article VI, Section 2
