5 Shapes are created by areas of color, or set off by areas of space, lines (squares, circles, etc.), texture, or a combination of any of these. Shapes can be ORGANIC,or Biomorphic (from NATURE ), or GEOMETRIC- (man made) With angles (Geometry-circle, rectangle, square, triangle, etc.)

Usually These vases were painted in bands-either “Black Figure” or “Red Figure” This is a Black Figure “eye” kylix cup used for drinking. Why is it called “eye cup”? On this plate (330 B.C.) Winged Nike the Goddess of Victory is seated on a column holding a box. The ornaments surrounding are flowering vines.

24 Ceramics Potter Research Report o This is a computer based research report and will be worth 35 points (10%). o You will need to submit it into turnitin.com. o Use the website www.ceramicstoday.com and click on “Featured Artists” at the bottom of the page.www.ceramicstoday o Examine the various artists and their work. Choose one that you like and read about them.

25 Format Requirements: o Your report information must be one full page in length, typed, double-spaced, size 12 Arial or Times New Roman font with one inch margins. o Type your name and period in the top right hand corner of your page (single space). o The name of the artist should be used as your title. o Second page should have picture(s) of potter’s work and references.

26 Use the following format and summarize: Page One (30 points): Paragraph One: (4 to 5 sentences) o Include some background information about the potter (where they are from, went to school, training, shows they’ve had). Paragraph Two and Three: (8 to 20 sentences) Describe the potter’s works: o State what type of clay body (porcelain, stoneware, etc.) is used if the article mentions that information. o What kind of clay shapes (organic, geometric), and the forms (sculptures, vases, plates, etc.), the potter creates.

27 Paragraph Two and Three: (8 to 20 sentences) (continued) Describe the potter’s works: o The method of construction (pinch, coil, slab, wheel), the artist uses. o Describe the pieces, themes (subjects), style, philosophy, etc. the potter utilizes. o Use at least two Elements of Art terms (see previous slides) to describe and explain one of the potter’s work. o Example: The texture in this piece is rough and resembles fur. OR The lines in this piece are organic and curved creating softer edges. o Be sure to underline the art term you use.

28 Paragraph Four: (2 to 3 sentences) o Write a few sentences about why you picked this artist and their work to write about. Page Two (5 points): o Copy and paste a picture(s) of work from this artist that you liked. o List the references you used under the picture(s) (type the web page addresses). **** If you don’t have enough information to write a full page … DON’T USE THAT POTTER!!! ****
