Guiding Question for our Leadership PLC:  How do we collaborate as leaders in a PLC that helps each district maximize PACE learning? 5

Introductions and Connections:  What does your district hope to get out of PACE? (10 minutes) 6

Definition of Collaboration Collaborate means to work jointly with others, especially in an intellectual endeavor

PLC Logic Model Building strong professional learning communities – focused on improving instruction, curriculum, and assessment – will result in increased teacher collaboration and an increase in the use of effective instructional practices in classrooms, leading to improved student achievement. Building vibrant Professional Learning Communities (PLC) Increased school collaboration focused on improving instruction & student learning Changes in School and Classroom Practices Improved Student Outcomes

Cultural Shifts in a PLC: 9 A Shift inFundamental Purpose: From a focus on teachingTo a focus on learning From emphasis on what was taught To a fixation on what students learned From coverage of contentTo demonstration of proficiency From providing individual teachers with curriculum documents such as state standards and curriculum guides To engaging collaborative team in building shared knowledge regarding essential curriculum “Learning by Doing” by Solution Tree

Change Process:

Professional collaboration is successful when:  There is substantive, intellectual discourse focused on improving instruction  There are defined norms and protocols  There is a culture of publicly sharing our work  It results in publicly questioning assumptions, and trying on new lenses to solve problems  It allows for differences in a respectful manner

What Does Professional Collaboration Look Like?  Looking at student and teacher work  Text-based discussions  Rounds or lab classrooms (peer observation)  Interdisciplinary teaching teams  Creating common assessments & rubrics  Refining curriculum  Data-based inquiry groups  Lesson study  Instructional leadership teams

Sharing intersections of the PACE work with ongoing district initiatives 13

NH DOE Goal for Tier 2 PACE Districts:  To build assessment literacy - including the power of performance assessments, integration with instruction and curriculum, and components of task design and review – for Tier 2 PACE districts. 14

Overview of the PACE Tier 2 year Cross-district Professional Development Institute Five-day QPA Institute over the course of the school year beginning in fall 2015 for a PACE team. Participants will learn the performance assessment process, create strong performance assessment tasks, and gain skills to lead assessment system development in their schools. (The institute will be held on-site at participating districts to be determined in consultation with districts.) Blended Learning Modules These online modules work in tandem with QPA Institute days to provide a dynamic and complete learning experience. The modules are designed to provide customized learning experiences for educators in between the in-person QPA Institute days, while enabling Tier 2 districts to use the modules with faculties in participating schools. The scope and sequence is based on individual district need. Coaching For each Tier 2 district, a CCE coach will provide up to eighteen coaching days to reinforce and apply learning from the QPA Institute throughout the district. Leadership PLC A forum for district and school leaders, facilitated by the CCE coaching team, to discuss the leadership role in building an assessment-literate district. (One-hour virtual meeting, scheduled periodically every 1-2 months) 15

Expectations for Participating Districts:  The district Tier 2 leads will be expected to participate in monthly one-hour Leadership PLC virtual sessions (by phone or web platform) with CCE to share practice about the leaders’ role, coordinate the Tier 2 work, review district feedback, and make any needed mid-course corrections.  The district creates a plan, with CCE assistance, for building assessment literacy for all teachers in designated schools by the end of the school year and ensuring that the appropriate people participate in the support activities.  The district team that attends the institute, listed in your PACE application to NHDOE, must be consistent and include at least one central office administrator and participating school leaders.  Each classroom teacher in all participating schools will engage in creating at least one performance task to be potentially field-tested in their classrooms in the spring. 16
