I am doing my talk on my granddad, Desmond.

He was born in March 1916 He grew up in Windhoek in Namibia His dad died when he was 14 and that meant they had to move to South Africa His brothers had to work because they didn’t have much money Then they moved to Cape Town and he finished school and did well He got a scholarship to go to Oxford University but they couldn't afford it

He worked on gold mines for a while, which are very deep and dangerous He started at a low rank and slowly climbed his way to the top Then he moved to diamond mines He became general manager of the diamond mine In Namibia they dug up the beach to get diamonds

He joined the army He was in a mortar company He became a sergeant El Alemein was an important town and the gateway to Egypt There were 195,000 men 1,351 tanks 1,900 pieces of artillery in the allied forces Allied forces won at El Alamein but had fought for almost 2 years across the desert 30,000 prisoners were taken after the battles
