“For Unto Us a Child is Born” A lunch time supervised Christmas Dance is also being hosted by the Student Council to help promote the “St. Vincent De Paul Christmas Drive”. Each division will be dancing during a lunch recess and we ask them to bring in a donated item for the drive. The intermediate Christmas Dance is on Wednesday, December 9 th at 11:50-12:30p.m. The Advent season is well under way and the Grade 7 students have vowed to make the true spirit of Christmas come alive in our classroom and school community. Last week, we celebrated a very meaningful Advent Mass at St. Ambrose. Thank you for joining us in beginning the season of preparing our hearts for the coming of Jesus. During our Religion classes, we will focus on learning about Advent, review scripture stories on the birth or Christ, and partake in showing kindness and caring within our class and community by participating in “Secret Santa” and acts of good will (advent celebrations, St. Vincent de Paul Drive, Dance, assembly preparation). We have some wonderful Christmas projects happening at school. The “Student Council” is helping to collect hats, mitts, scarves, socks and non-perishable food for the St. Vincent de Paul Society to help keep families in need warm and fed this winter season. The need is great this time of year. Any support you can give is greatly appreciated. Items will be collected beginning the week of December 7-11 th. What are We Learning? Language: We are continuing to make connections in texts to our own knowledge, to other texts, and the world around us. We are concluding our “read aloud” Egghead and participating in reading circles. We will launch our “Current Issues” unit by reviewing world events and facilitating a class debate on the topic. Math: We are beginning our unit on the area of parallelograms, trapezoids and composite figures. Students will investigate and develop formulas to help them solve real-world problems involving these 2-D shapes and figures.. Religion and Family Life: “We Believe In God the Creator of Heaven and Earth”. We are exploring the many gifts we have been given and how we are called to care for our environment and use our gifts to invite others to give and share. In Family Life, we are exploring various relationships including aspects of healthy relationships and challenges (e.g. peer pressure). Health: We are concluding our learning about healthy food choices, eating practices and other factors that contribute to healthy development (mental health issues, fitness, self-image). We are also sharing our “Healthy Living” websites in class presentations the first week back from the holidays. Phys-Ed: We are focusing on sending and receiving a ball to a target while applying basic motion and position principles in different strategic activities (e.g. Hockey and indoor active games). Science: We are applying the Scientific Method while experimenting with the solubility of substances and the rate at which they dissolve. We will also create a filtration device that separates different mixtures. History: We are investigating how the Great Migrations impacted British North America, and the factors that led to change and the Rebellions of 1837. Drama: We are actively engaging in role play focusing on different perspectives related to current issues. We are developing a drama presentation incorporating a series of tableaux with levels, facial gestures and action. Have a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year! Ms. Lemos News From Mme. Sliter Bonjour! During the month of December we will continue to review the present tense of the verb avoir and will begin the verb être. Students will be tested on the verb avoir the week of December 2nd and will be tested on the verb être the week of December 14th. With the holiday season quickly approaching, we will be learning Christmas vocabulary and will look into French Christmas holiday traditions. I’d like to take this time to wish your family a Joyeux Noël and Bonne Année!
