1 Information for people with reduced mobility in the field of public transport Barrierefreie ÖV-Information für mobilitätseingeschränkte Menschen Peter Vollmer RMV Head of Communication

2 People with reduced mobility as an important group of customers Many persons will benefit from new services  about 9 % of the german population are disabled  20 to 25 % of the german population have a (temporarily) reduced mobility (other surveys by RMV: up to 40 %)  user groups (examples): inability to walk, walking impaired, blindeness, visual impairment, deafness,... but also passengers with children or luggage, elderly people,...  number of people with reduced mobility will increase  requirements of information will change and crow  intention: design for all Source: IVU

3 Idea of the project BAIM (1) The idea of the project is to develop information services for people with reduced mobility in the field of public transport  information about the accessibility and usability of public transport systems  all journey stages, from planning to travelling  analysis of the different requirements of user groups  static and dynamic information  special data management Source: RMV

4 Idea of the project BAIM (2) The idea of the project is to develop information services for people with reduced mobility in the field of public transport  already existing route planning solutions and scheduling systems via Internet  new services e. g. via mobile phone, PDA, smartphone, and conversational systems based on natural language technologies  first services base on target scheduling times  later real-time information will be given Source: RMV

5 Participation of users The participation of users is an important factor for the success of the project  permanent attandace by RMV – working committee for accessibility  representatives of various user groups, organisations and institutions  survey of user requirements  priorities of services and information  evaluation of services  market research (user groups and the general population, focus: design for all) Source: RMV

6 Information for mobility reduced peolpe The information should be detailed to enable people with reduced mobility to judge whether they can use public transport or not. Example: wheelchair-users will get information about  gaps and steps, ramps, lifts  width of doors and opening hours of station entrances and other passages  manouvering space, areas for wheelchairs, mulitfunctional areas in vehicles  toilets, counters and service facilities in stations and stops  accecssible control and communication systems ... 10 10 New and extended services (4) Source: RMV Further Services (mainly in later phases of the project)  personalisation, profile for the most important user groups  integration of real-time information (delays, change of platforms, functioning of lifts...)  on trip-information (push services via SMS or e-mail)  dynamic plans of stations (accoring user requirements)  footway routing (especially in large stations)

11 The partners for the project BAIM are:  Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund GmbH (concept, test)  Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH (concept, test)  HaCon Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH (route planning solutions, scheduling systems)  IVU Traffic Technologies AG (data integration)  SemanticEdge (natural language technologies)  Forschungsinstitut Technologie-Behindertenhilfe (user demands) sponsored by Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (Ferderal Ministry of Education and Reseach) Partners

12 AnalysisDevelopment  Analysis of user demands  Specification of services for different user groups  Requirements for the content of information  Development of an efficient data management  Realisation of a database  Data supply for test areas (Frankfurt Rhein Main, Berlin Brandenburg and between these areas) Implementation & Test  Realisation of services by „New Technologies“ (internet, mobile, pda/smartphone...)  Exemplarily test in selected corridors (Frankfurt Rhein Main, Berlin Brandenburg and between these areas) Operation & Transfer  Business case  Concept for area- wide expansion (Frankfurt Rhein Main and Berlin Brandenburg)  Concept for the transfer to other transit authorities and transport associations Process

13 Process Analysis of user demands/requirements Data management, data collection Realisation of services (especially static information) Test (June - July 2006) Evaluation Analysis of user demands/requirements Data management, data collection Realisation of services (especially dynamic information) Test (May – July 2007) Evaluation Analysis of user demands/requirements Data management, data collection Realisation of services Test (September – November 2007) Evaluation Phase 1 (regional services, 2005/2006) Phase 2 (regional services, 2006/2007) Phase 3 (supra-regional/ nationwide services, 2007/2008)

14 The importance of the project BAIM for RMV The project BAIM is important for RMV, because it helps to  fullfill the german guidelines concerning accessibility  improve the quality of information  win customers loyality  acquire customers Source: IVU

15 Thank you for your attention! Peter Vollmer RMV Head of Communication
