Integrated Catchment Management & Capacity Building for Improving Livelihoods in Afghanistan Feedback on Stakeholders’ training Organized by ICARDA & LNRMI 6 th – 9 th October, 2015

Stakeholders’ Rating of the WSD training program Particulars Average Rating (On a scale of 1- 10) % of Participants giving rating higher than the average rating Visits NABARD WS8.1 60 (52) ICRISAT 9.3 56 (56) Overall8.764 (28) Video Presentations Ralegaon Siddi – Anna Hazare 9.5 76 (76) Huwre Bazar 8.860 (40) Overall 9.1 52 (28) Oral Presentations Mr. Wesley (RD) 9.2 56 (56) Dr. Ratna Reddy on 1st day 9.4 68 (68) Dr. Ratna Reddy on Last day 9.5 64 (64) Mr. Ram 9.0 64 (48) Dr. Sreedevi (NGRI) 8.864 (44) Dr. Bijju (ICARDA) 8.556 (36) Dr. KV Rao (CRIDA) 8.652 (36) Overall 9.0 64 (24) Figures in the bracket refer to the % of participants giving highest rating (10)

Highlights General I learned theoretical and practical Watershed management was very useful. The topics discussed were highly enjoyable. All the topics were very interesting and belong to dry land area All the topics were good and highly enjoyable. Enjoyed all the programmes Specific Field visit /visit to ICRISAT rainfall collection, Data collection, laboratory soil analysis, Biomass Sustainable watershed management Videos on watershed development Presentation by Dr. Bijju Aquifer implementation Presentation of Dr. Ratna Reddy Presentations on watershed management

Major Learning from the training - 1 Watershed is a good programme- It improves agricultural sector and dry land areas and also increase yield rates and economic subsystems. How to change the dry areas to Green areas and I have learnt about the project implementations, etc. What is watershed, Characters, Planning and designing Management of the natural Resources by integrated approach I learnt one thing that if we work together and accept each other then we will achieve success.

Major Learning from the training - 2 Watershed Development; Watershed Structures; About Data Collection WSD & WSM Learned about site selection ; purpose of watershed creation Knowledge of watershed and hydrological programme through all aspects and this programme was useful for implementation in our country Water management and plan Watershed development, Planning, Implementation procedure, etc.

Major Learning from the training - 3 Watershed Development; Watershed policies and process of their implementation; Role of institution in WSM; Capacity building activities in community participation Watershed and implementing of watershed activities and procedure for selection of area for the watershed Watershed project and designing and also implementing, some methods how to increase irrigated land through check dams and also how to establish watershed.

Suggestions – Overall The time or duration for this programme was less and due to more good topics and discussion we could not see the full presentation. But it was very good and all presentations were good presentations and shared their experience. I just want to say it was superb.

Suggestions - Context If possible make lectures focus on-WSD and WSM for Afghanistan situation Use of Afghanistan geography, climate and society will be more efficient. Indian instructors should know little bit about situation, climate and soil of Afghanistan

Suggestions – Topics Focus more about water conservation that will be more useful in our country as well More information on sustainable watershed management Information on new techniques being adopted for watershed development in different states of India. About different communities, how they work hard and how they accept each other. Biomass for present (short-run?)

Suggestions – Field Visits Field visit is important for us to learn how we can design the watershed. Visit to more watersheds and more provinces Visit to those watersheds where the conditions are similar to our own country- focus on watersheds having similar problems and how those are solved. Field visit should be more (duration/number of fields visited/time in each field)???

Suggestions – More trainings More training in the future; Participation from Agriculture Ministry of Afghanistan and related sectors; Increase activities in Afghanistan. These participants must be invited for the next watershed related trainings. Conducting more programmes is my suggestion for future. More provision for training in the future

Suggestions – Duration The planned duration for the WSM training was less as a standard. The Programme time should be broadened Other trainings in above mentioned issues should also be taken up in future Extend the duration and include practical work on the field.

Topics to know more about Specific People's participation in Watershed Programme; Water distribution; Land use systems; Water use efficiency Dry land farming methods Drought resistant crops Soil structure and texture Components of different watersheds in terms of geography and soil percent materials Technical aspects of watershed WS Technologies required during baseline survey and assessments General Practical work on watershed designing, planning and selecting location for watershed development, watershed management etc. More about water conservation Water management systems New techniques for project sustainability Different types of WSM WSD in other countries
