3. DEFINITION OF COMPOUND EPITHELIUM
A multilayered arrangement of cells,
Only basal cells resting on the basement membrane.
Apical cells vary in shape and size.
A group of cells arranged in many layers, with out having intercellular spaces and material like fibers and ground substance.
It is also called as stratified epithelium.

5. CLASSIFICATION OF COMPOUND EPITHELIUM
Stratified Squamous non keratinized,
Stratified Squamous Keratinized,
Stratified Columnar,
Stratified Cuboidal,
Transitional/ Urothelium &
Pseudo stratified ciliated columnar.

FOUND IN ESOPHAGUS, VAGINA,CORNEA,CONJUNCTIVA , PALATINE TONSIL & TONGUE

15. The transitional Epithelium/UROTHELIUM
1.The transitional epithelium is a special type
of stratified epithelium.
2. It is found in urinary passages.
3.When the bladder is full, the apical cells stretches
and become squamous.
4.In the relaxed bladder, the apical cells are
balloon like/ umbrella like/dome like.

Olfactory epithelium is specialized
The olfactory cells are modified

There is no regeneration in
these cells, no mitosis

Found in the roof and
on nasal turbinate.
