Asthma Asthma is a chronic condition which causes the bronchioles of the lungs to constrict, making breathing difficult.
3
Exercise induced asthma
Exercise can induce asthmatic symptoms in patients who do not have triggers or experience asthma under any other circumstances. People with exercise induced asthma have bronchioles which are more sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. The contrast between warm air in your body and cold air which you inhale causes an asthma attack.
4
The causes of asthma Common triggers for asthma include animals, dust, extreme weather changes, exercise, and tobacco smoke. Asthma is caused by chronic inflammation of the bronchioles to due over exposure to specific triggers. These triggers may vary in different patients.
5
Medications Patients are often prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs. These medications, also know as corticosteriods, reduce the swelling and mucus production in the airways, making them less sensitive to triggers.
6
Medications For immediate relief, people with asthma are often prescribed an inhaler as well. Bronchodilators dilate and relax the bronchi, allowing for easier breathing.
7
Alternative forms of treatment
Doctors are studying the use of acupuncture as an alternative to bronchodilators and other steroids prescribed to patients. People with asthma should avoid their triggers as best as possible and be aware of their symptoms nonetheless.
8
Recovery Asthma is a chronic illness . Patients may experience an extended symptom free length of time however. By remaining on their medication and monitoring their symptoms, however, they are able to avoid any severe asthma attacks.
