2. What is a Field Study? Field Studies are academic or other investigative studies undertaken in a natural setting rather than in classrooms. Studying outside the class room gives students a sensible and cost effective real life experience of the greater world in which they will live. Benefits of Educational Field Studies Academic: This form of experiential learning allows students to have an increased ability to apply and practice what they learn through hands-on experience in the real world. Edgar Dale’s Cone of Experience states that “we learn 10 percent of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we hear and see, 70% of what we say, and 90% of what we both say and do.” Social: Students and teachers are engaged in learning together building opportunities to better know one another. It can inspire students to be more engaged in the learning process as well as stimulated by their environment as they experience the world around them. Emotional: Allows students to learn and practice leadership responsibility. The service orientation of our studies help students to better understand the relevance of education in the community as they grow in practiced social interaction.

3. The journey is oriented around the theme of leadership. Through their course of study in both Humanities and Language Arts, students will come to know the important history and characteristics of our nation’s greatest leaders. While exploring the many tributes and locales for these great leaders, students will gain new insights and discoveries through this hands-on, up close experience.

7. 6:45 AM Wakeup call 7:00-7:45 AM Breakfast at hotel 7:45-8:15 AM Morning meeting 8:15 AM Check out of hotel 8:30 AM Depart from hotel 9:30 AM Group orientation on the National Mall 10:00 AM Time for individual touring in smaller groups at the Smithsonian Museums of Natural History, American History, Air & Space, African Art, etc., w/lunch in museum cafeteria. 4:00 PM Depart from Washington. 4:30 PM Dinner at Old Country Buffet - Woodbridge 5:30 PM Depart for home 11:00 PM Arrival at MICS (time is approximate -- parents will be updated throughout the evening as to actual time of arrival)

8. The following staff will be traveling on the field study Jeff Serra Michael Carpenter Monica Belus Ken Osterndorf Parent/Guardian Chaperones Parent/guardian chaperones will join the field study trip (the number of parent/guardian chaperones will be determined by the number of students on the trip) If there are more people interested in chaperoning then spots available, there will be a chaperone lottery which will be held on Wednesday, October 15 th, after dismissal in room 701. ALL PARENT/GUARDIAN CHAPERONES ARE REQUIRED TO MEET WITH THE FIELD SUDY COORDINATOR (date to be determined) AND COMPLETE THE CHAPERONE TRAINING,SIGN THE PARENT/GUARDIAN AGREEMENT, AND PASS A COMPLETE BACKGROUND CHECK Parents/guardians who attend the field study trip will be expected to pay the full price of the trip which could be more than the student price (due to room arrangements and ticket prices).

Vernon Food Court Dinner – at Buca di Beppo Friday Breakfast - continental breakfast at hotel Lunch - in the Museum cafeteria Dinner – at the Old Country Buffet Snacks – will be provided throughout the trip (granola bars, breakfast bars,, pretzels, juice boxes, fresh fruit, fruit chewies, and water)

The students will be staying at the Country Inn & Suites Located at 2621 Prince William Parkway Woodbridge,VA 22192 Front Desk: | (703)492-6868 Students will choose at least one friend to room with (Roommate Request Form) Security – a security guard will be posted outside the rooms during the night – 10:30 PM – 6 AM

11. Mr. Serra will be the traveling “shaman” to administer and manage all medications. ALL students must have a completed Trip Medical Form Over-the-counter medications can be given (section to be completed on Trip Medical Form) A meeting with the trip “shaman” can be arranged prior to the trip to discuss any specific requirements No vitamins will be administered during the trip

12. 1 camera and 1 other piece of technology (iPod, Phone, DS, PSP, Kindle, Nooks, etc…) Charging will only be allowed prior to lights out Students will not be allowed to use their phones for any reason or at any point during day/evening other than to make their nightly calls home and traveling to and from venues ALL technology will be kept overnight by staff
