OUR JOURNEY FROM CLASSROOM AND LAB TO CENTER OF LEARNING AND SIMULATION 2009 to Present

Home to Sandhills Community College Nursing Program for Associate Degree and Practical Nurses Kennedy Hall…..

OUR PATIENTS WERE ALL STATIC MANIKINS

NOT ALL OF OUR BEDS WERE FULL

BIT BY BIT WE STARTED INCORPORATING SIMULATION INTO OUR CURRICULUM AMELIA DENNIS TOOK THE LEAD IN WRITING FOR A GRANT… THE GRANT ALLOWED US TO PURCHASE VIDEO EQUIPMENT WE COULD USE TO RECORD STUDENTS DURING SIMULATIONS. Video recording promotes self awareness and critical thinking, which will improve patient care. It can be used during the debriefing process, which occurs after a simulation, to show and discuss with students the care they provided for their patient. This is where a high percentage of the learning actually takes place. TV for reviewing recording Microphon e Camera on the ceiling

SPACE WAS TIGHT… WE USED CLASSROOMS AND SCREENS TO MAKE HOSPITAL ROOMS…

IN 2010 WE PURCHASED 3 SIMULATORS FROM LAERDAL SIM BABY NURSING KELLY NURSING ANNE Now our students could not only insert tubes and catheters, but they could hear heart sounds, lung sounds and bowel sounds, as well as take a B.P., pulse and RR.

BUT, OUR SIMULATORS HAD NO HOME IS THIS A CLASS ROOM OR A HOSPITAL ROOM?

WE NEEDED A PLAN

DURING THE SUMMER OF 2012 WE WORKED AROUND A LOT OF CHAOS….

EQUIPMENT…..

DUST……

AND NOISE…… Building the control room for K-106 & K-107 Putting in new headwalls with functioning suction and air…… Building the control room for K-101

FINALLY,WE HAVE CLOSED IN WALLS, GLASS IN OUR CONTROL ROOM, AND NEW FUNCTIONING HEADWALLS!!!

WE HAVE NEW BEDS FOR OUR ROOMS…. WHERE SHOULD WE PUT IT ALL? Geoff Cheryl

NEW VIDEO RECORDING CAMERAS AND CONTROL BOXES…. Camera to record video Microphone to record sound during the simulations Computer with control box for moving and adjusting cameras

HIGH TECHNOLOGY…… NEW COMPUTERS Computers programs that can be run as “pre-programmed or “on the fly” (changes are made as you go) High Fidelity Simulators that run off from a computer program Judy Geoff, Lynn, Cheryl, Kathy, Imogene

BIG SCREEN TVS: FOR VIEWING RECORDED SIMULATION VIDEO DURING DEBRIEFING AND FOR SHOWING EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS Tina Students from class of 2013

CHECK TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WORKS….. There are a lot of mechanics on the inside Geoff working on Sim Man Essential

BASED ON YOUR CURRICULUM AND COURSE OBJECTIVES CHOOSE A CHART EITHER YOU DEVELOPED OR PURCHASED

PREP FOR SIMULATION Simulation must include things that make the realism level high, so that students “buy in” to the experience as one that feels real… Preparing for a normal birth simulation…. Heather and Jayne Using ice blocks as a prep to add realism: for cool clammy skin in a hypoglycemia patient

“MOULAGE” ….. CREATING WOUNDS & BURNS THAT ARE REALISTIC ADDS TO THE OVERALL REALISM OF THE SCENARIO

Moulage on our created patients Andrea

STUDENTS RECEIVE SBAR REPORT ON THEIR PATIENTS FROM AN INSTRUCTOR OR ANOTHER STUDENT During some simulations a student peer as well as an instructor evaluate the simulation for discussion in debriefing Di with a student

DURING THE SIMULATIONS THE INSTRUCTORS AND SIMULATION TECHS ADJUST THE PATIENT’S COURSE BASED ON THE STUDENT’S INTERVENTIONS. THE INSTRUCTOR TALKS THROUGH A MICROPHONE, WHICH THE STUDENTS CAN HEAR AS THE PATIENT’S VOICES. Heather, Jayne, & Joey

AFTER THE SIMULATION IS COMPLETED, THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY SIT DOWN AND HAVE A DEBRIEFING SESSION. DURING THE DEBRIEFING SESSION THE STUDENTS ARE ASKED WHAT THEY THINK THEY DID WELL, WHAT THEY THINK THEY COULD HAVE DONE BETTER, AND WHAT THEY LEARNED DURING THE SIMULATION. DURING THE SIMULATION, THE STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY GIVE HOLISTIC CARE IN A SAFE NON- THREATENING ENVIRONMENT. THE GOAL IS TO LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES MADE HERE AND PREVENT THEM FROM OCCURRING IN THE CLINICAL ENVIRONMENT WHERE SOMEONE COULD BE HARMED……
