1 Theme Of The Bible Section XII: Genesis 21-24

2 Genesis 21 God Keeps His Promises (21:1-7)

3 Genesis 22 Proving of Faith—No More Wavering (Jas. 2:21-24)
What does this mean or how might this relate to the promise to Abraham? Parallels: Abraham’s only son Isaac carried wood for the sacrifice Both were near Jerusalem (Moriah is where the temple was built, 2 Chron. 3:1) Isaac naïve but Jesus knew it was the Father’s will (Matt. 26:39; Jn. 12:27) A ram was provided in the place of Isaac, but nothing was provided in the place of God’s Son

4 Genesis 22 Could the promise be fulfilled if the only son dies?
Hebrews 11:17-19 Ultimately the only begotten Son would come to this place and die for man’s sin in order to fulfill the promise of Abraham—Abraham being the father of many nations has a profound fulfillment in the creation of the church where the Gentiles entered by faith (Rom. 4:11-25)

5 Isaac’s Upbringing What does this show about Isaac’s upbringing?
6 So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. 7 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "My father!" And he said, "Here I am, my son." Then he said, "Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" It shows that Abraham had instructed him in the ways of the Lord (cf. Gen. 18:19). He was familiar with worship and what went on in these sacrifices.
