4 Financial Support & Colony Organization Expensive and not easy Risky Some (including Sir Walter Raleigh) lost everything; wealthy reluctant English investors created joint-stock companies Pool money to create company “shares of stock” If failed, only lost amount you put in. Best known joint-stock company: Virginia Company—created to get metals, minerals, & medicines from New World. Company controlled two groups, one of which (London group) financed Jamestown.

5 Charters Charter: a document containing rules about where the colony can be located and how it would be managed. Charters were the “permission slip” of kings. Colonies founded in this manner were called “Charter Colonies”...yes, a creative name indeed.

6 Proprietary Colonies proprietary means branded or private Colonies gifted to individuals or groups by the king. Could be governed however the individuals or groups wanted.

7 Royal Colonies Directly owned and controlled by the king.
