1 MEDICAL WEBINARS: FEEDBACK and FUTURE PLANS Michael Fuller Team Leader Medical Radiation Safety Team U.S. NRC August 26, 2015

2 Training series on topics related to medical inspection and licensing activities. Training initiative to provide technical support to inspectors and license reviewers in the NRC Regions, Agreement State Radiation Control Programs, and Master Materials Licensee Programs. Focus on performance-based (less prescriptive) inspections and risk informed licensing

3 Training is conducted live in NRC Regions and via webinar. The first two sessions were held on: –December 2 nd, 2014 (RIII – Lisle, IL) and –March 26 th, 2015 (RIV – Arlington, TX) Currently held semi-annually (next session in October).

4 Provided information on the causes of medical events and presented some past case examples (therapy events). Discussed NRC’s current inspection guidance that calls for a less prescriptive and more performance- based inspection.

7 2 nd session – Update on IP 87132 for Brachytherapy Programs Overview of Inspection Procedure (IP) and updates based on proposed revisions to the regulations Major change in regulation – ME reporting criteria for permanent implant brachytherapy in 10 CFR 35.3045 from dose-based to activity/source strength-based. IP now includes NRC Interim Enforcement Policy (IEP) for Permanent Implant Brachytherapy ME Reporting. IEP bridges the gap to an activity-based rule for the treatment site and will remain in place until final rule is implemented.
