Classifying properties and changes.
2
Classifying Properties Ask yourself the following questions. How do I know this property exists? – Did I touch it? – Did I look at it? – Did I smell it? – Did I hear it? – Did I taste it? If you answered yes to any question it is physical.
3
If you answered no, it may still be physical. Did I measure it? – With a ruler? – With a balance or scale? – With a clock or timer? – With a thermometer? – With something that measures volume? If yes it is probably physical
4
Last check….. Did I only know this property exists because I tested it with something else? – If you did not use your senses or a measuring device and you needed to test it with something else. It is a chemical property
5
Classifying Changes Ask yourself the following questions. What were its physical properties before the change? – Can I still tell that most of them exist? – Can I identify each type of matter that was combined? – Can it be undone easily? If you answered yes to these questions it is physical.
6
Classifying Changes Ask yourself the following questions. Where the changes expected? – Was the mass greater or lighter then when it started? – Did it get hot or cold without adding heat or taking heat away? If I changed heat was there more used or given off than I put in? – Did the color change seem illogical? If you answered yes to these questions it is chemical.
