After successful completion of this Lesson you will be able to answer: 1.What are the 3 properties of a soil? 2.How the physical properties of a soil control the behavior of a soil? 3.How the chemical properties of a soil control the behavior of a soil? 4.How the biological properties of a soil influence the behavior of a soil? Virtual Academy for the Semi Arid Tropics Lesson 3: What soil properties control the behavior of a soil? Course on Soil and Soil Health Module I: About Soil

Virtual Academy for the Semi Arid Tropics Lesson 3: What soil properties control the behavior of a soil? Course on Soil and Soil Health Module I: About Soil Soil being a living organism exhibits all the 3 properties of any living being on the earth. These 3 properties are: 1. Physical properties 2. Chemical properties 3. Biological properties The nature of these properties determines how the soil behaves in supporting plant life.

Virtual Academy for the Semi Arid Tropics Lesson 3: What soil properties control the behavior of a soil? Course on Soil and Soil Health Module I: About Soil Physical properties control Texture (mix of sand, silt and clay) Soil moisture relationships (through porosity, Infiltration, drainage) Soil aggregation (loose, crumb or cloddy soil) Tilth

Virtual Academy for the Semi Arid Tropics Lesson 3: What soil properties control the behavior of a soil? Course on Soil and Soil Health Module I: About Soil Chemical properties control Mineral content (parent material) Organic matter Nutrient content Soil reactions (salinity, acidity)

Virtual Academy for the Semi Arid Tropics Lesson 3: What soil properties control the behavior of a soil? Course on Soil and Soil Health Module I: About Soil Biological properties control Biological activity (bacteria, fungi etc.) Biodiversity (presence of different types of microorganisms) Release of plant nutrients Disease infection and supressiveness.

Virtual Academy for the Semi Arid Tropics Lesson 3: What soil properties control the behavior of a soil? Course on Soil and Soil Health Module I: About Soil These 3 properties of a soil control the behavior of a soil. But these properties are changed by the practices followed in crop production i.e. agriculture modifies soils. Good soils are good to the extent farmers makes use of them. Our longer-term goal is to keep building up the soil and leave it in better condition than how we found it. That starts with the healthy soil.

This concludes Lesson 3: What soil properties control the behavior of a soil? and also this Module. The next Module on Soil Health in this course has 3 lessons. Select Module II from Course contents Virtual Academy for the Semi Arid Tropics Course on Soil and Soil Health Module I: About Soil
