First people to use coined money made by their government. (earlier people bartered- exchanging/trading one good or service for another.) To work, coins had to be Accepted by everybody Light enough to carry (gold/silver) Identifiable- stamped with the mark of the king Lydians

Money was used to set prices for goods and services Became a Money Economy- an economic system based on the use of money instead of bartering
