5 Strategies Reading: Finger Spelling – sound out words – start with your thumb – one sound (not letter) per finger -- i.e., cat - /c/ /a/ /t/ Arm Tapping – tap out “red words” or non-phonetic words by stating the letter name beginning at your shoulder -- i.e., the –t, h, e Guided Reading Strategies: Word Detective: Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish, Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, Flippy Dolphin, Skippy Frog, Tryin’ Lion

6 Ascend SMS Ascend SMS Used for newsletters, messages, posting grades, bulk s, etc. Please, login right away!! Newsletters that contain information about our week and upcoming events are sent via Ascend each Friday.

7 Classroom Rules Listen when someone is talking. Follow directions quickly and quietly. Raise your hand to speak. Respect others, yourself, and your school. Be safe. Be honest. Make good choices! Behavior Plan – Gold Tags *Gold tags earned for making good choices and being a kind friend. *Tags can be taken away for making poor choices after redirection has been provided. *Tags counted and turned in for special choicetime activities on Fridays. *Focus on rules and appropriate student behaviors. *Much guidance will be provided. *Rule form will be sent home to ask parents to reinforce a certain rule with your child.

8 Kindergarten Fun Fun Friday 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. --Count gold tags and choicetime Parent Helpers – Must be Virtus approved *Let me know your availability. * Parties – Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day Volunteer Possibilities – Library, Lunchroom, Recess, Pizza Lunch Other Activities – Walk-a-thon, Field Day Field Trips – Cincinnati Museum Center –March 4th; Children’s Theatre --April 13th; Firehouse field trip --TBA Birthdays – Small edible treat to be passed out at lunch (11:00 a.m.) or in afternoon at 1 p.m. Let me know when you want to celebrate your child’s birthday –send or call me . I will celebrate on the closest date to your child’s birthday or ½ birthday. A treat to share is optional. Our room is nut free. * We do have a child with a peanut and tree nut allergy.*

9 Helpful Hints Double knot your child’s shoelaces.
Try to pack snack and lunch items that kids can open by themselves. Use the take-home folder to send papers/notes to school. Show your child what you are putting in the folder. Go to the bathroom before coming to school. Put your child’s name on everything - even clothing. Put my cell phone number and the school’s number in your phone. Go to bed early. Read every day!!
