2. Each individual in a community is considered a citizen. As citizens we should become involved in the community to help make it better. There are many different ways as citizens to be actively involved in the democratic process such as: voting, student government, involvement in political decision making, analyzing issues, petitioning public officials. We will learn different ways that citizens can be beneficially to a community and what they can do to help the community be better.

After learning about the rights, responsibilities, and roles of citizenship you will create a community service activity for the class to participate in. 1.Research the rights and responsibilities of a citizen. 2.Fill out the student packet about rights, responsibilities, and the roles of a citizen. Answers will be found on the websites provided. 3.Review different community services ideas. 4.Make a plan for the community service activity you would like to complete with the class: 1)What will the class be doing? 2)What materials will be needed? 3)When will the class be participating in the service project? 4)How long will be needed to complete the project? 5)What outside help (parents, other teachers, principal) will be needed? 5.Create a Power Point to present your community service activity to the class. 6.Create a poster to advertise your service project. There are three major parts to this project. 1.Individual handouts Each team member is responsible for researching the websites on the “Resources” page and answering the questions in complete sentences. 2.Poster promoting your Community Service activity One team member will be in charge of the words on the poster. This person should have good handwriting that is legible from a 10 foot distance. One team member will be in charge of all the illustrations on the poster. This person should have a talent in drawing and enjoy the process of drawing. One team member will be in charger of coloring the poster. This person should be a good at coloring in the lines and be patient to take their time with the coloring. The last team member will be in charge of making sure all aspects of the poster are included. This person will check the rubric for the poster to make sure all needed parts are included. This person will also lead the group when deciding on what the poster should include and look like. All team member will be helping each other and willing to give advice when asked for it. 3.Power Point for you Community Service activity One team member will be in charge of creating the layout and background of your Power Point presentation. This person will also be in charge of saving the project each day to the flash drive. One team member will be in charge of finding appropriate picture for the Power Point presentation. This person will search the internet and local files for pictures that will add to the presentation. One team member will be in charge of typing the content of the Power Point presentation. This person should be comfortable with typing in Word documents and with copying and pasting from one program to another. The last team member will be in charge for editing the Power Point presentation. This person should be comfortable with editing skill and be proficient in the trait of conventions.
