SCREENCASTING PSLA April 20, 2010 Session C-6 Jim Lauritsen jlaurits@mansfield.edu
2
What is screencasting? 1.A means of capturing a single screen shot from a computer program and saving it for further use. 2. A means of capturing through video a series of screen movements, include audio and save the results for further use.
3
screencasting Screencasts may be viewed through a variety of online methods. 1.Web Page 2.Email 3.Other options
4
Web Page In many cases we probably would place a link somewhere on a web page. It could be placed directly on the school library page Or, perhaps into a course or unit that has been developed in collaboration with a teacher. Blackboard Academic Suite Blackboard Academic Suite
5
email Another possibility is to send a copy of the screencast via email. This works in any email account, for example… After the screencast has been completed and saved, it is a simple copy and add from Screencast.com into your email.
6
Other options Jing allows you to send images directly to the following programs: You Tube Twitter Facebook
7
SCREENCAST PROGRAMS There are 2 basic programs needed in order to perform a screencast successfully and save it for further use. 1.You need a screencast program 2.You need a place to save it for future retrieval.
8
SCREENCAST PROGRAMS There are a variety of programs available on the market today. Some are at cost. As in most cases, the free programs lack some of the sophistication of the at cost programs.
9
SCREENCAST PROGRAMS Free programs CamStudio TipCam ScreenToaster Screencast-O-Matic Jing
10
SCREENCAST PROGRAMS At Cost programs Camtasia Studio Snagit ScreenFlow iShowU Snapz Pro
11
SCREENCAST PROGRAMS Additional programs Screencast.com Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

JING - Free
13
Needed Hardware Computer Microphone Basic microphone can be used USB microphone/ear phones are best Built in microphone on the computer generally allows too much background and does not record well enough for a “professional sound”
14
Library Applications There are many library applications for screencasting programs Guide to how to use the library Home Page Tutorials on the OPAC Tutorials for ACCESS PENNSYLVANIA Tutorials on the use of subscription databases, POWER LIBRARY, etc.
15
There are three simple steps to creating your own screen capture
16
Capture
17
Save
18
Share
19
Let’s Go Live Let’s try a live example by doing a screen cast of ACCESS PENNSYLVANIA 1.Open Jing by clicking on the icon where you keep it. 2.The sun will then appear at the top of your screen.
20
Live Demo Note that there are 3 bubbles that extend from the sun 1.The bubble on the left provides a variety of options 2.The middle bubble shows the recent history of captures for quick access 3.The third bubble opens the capture screen
21
Live Demo First we will open the link Access Pennsylvania Now we open the left bubble and set our capture. Note that after you set the cross hairs and click capture video icon, the count down begins. Capture the video. Your voice will be recorded automatically
22
Live Demo When you finish, replay the video. If you do not like it, then try again. If you like what you have, you then have two options. 1.Save the file as you would any other file 2.Upload it to Screencast.com for future use
23
Live Demo When you log in to Screencast.com you will be able to establish folders for organizing your captures. Highlight the icons next to the respective capture for your use. Share will be the most likely choice. This provide the URL to be placed in the program of your choice.

Jing – Help!!!

Jing provides excellent help. Use the right Sun bubble and click on the ? There are a number of well done video tutorials. At the bottom of the screen there is a.pdf getting started guide.
31
Jing Pro Jing also offers a professional version for the fairly inexpensive price of $14.95 per year. The chart on the following slide highlights differences. One main difference is that the capture can be seen without an advertising logo. Also, more direct access is enabled for Facebook, You Tube and Twitter

Audacity There is an additional free program called Audacity. This enables you to record and produce your own MP3 files.
