Solving Quadratic Equations To solve a quadratic equation, first put it in general form: ax 2 + bx + c = 0 Factorise the equation. Apply Null Law by letting each factor be equal to zero and solve for the variable.
10
Solving Quadratic Equations Example: Solve: x 2 – 5x + 3 = 17 Put in general form: x 2 – 5x – 14 = 0 Factor: (x + 2)(x – 7) = 0
11
Solving Quadratic Equations Solve: x 2 – 5x + 3 = 17 (x + 2)(x – 7) = 0 Set each factor equal to zero and solve: x + 2 = 0 x – 7 = 0 x = -2 x = 7 So the solutions to x 2 – 5x + 3 = 17 are x = -2 and x = 7
