The Aftermath of War…. Civil War ends April 9th, 1865, when Grant and Lee meet at Appomattox Court House to negotiate a surrender – one month later all Confederate resistance had collapsed

Effects of war: Total deaths is almost equal to all other American wars combined 10% of pop. served in military for 4 years… disruption to their lives Secession was always a threat before war – no more! But states’ rights argument still there… Growth of Federal Power

North and South affected differently… N. economy thrived! S. economy devastated No more slavery – staple of old economy 40% of livestock wiped out Railroads, farms, and cities destroyed (most fighting takes place on S. land…)
