Learning Objectives Understand why the beginning and the end of your writing is so important. Experiment with adapting the style and tone of your writing. Understand how to adapt your writing to different audiences.

Beginnings and Endings The beginning and end of your writing is as important as the bit in the middle because it sets the tone and introduces your reader to what you are writing about. The ending is equally important because it’s the final impression you leave with the reader and summarises or emphasises the main ideas in your response.

Information and Ideas’ Beginnings and Endings. Activity Write the beginning and ending for each of the following tasks: a letter to a friend who has moved to another country. a magazine article looking at the effects of binge drinking. an email to a company asking them to donate products for a charity auction. Compare your beginning and ending for each text with a partner. Which are the best sentences? Why?

In pairs, analyse the 4 different NHS leaflets. Fill out the table below. Generic leafletYoung PeopleRelapse Smokers Passive smokers Pick out two phrases which indicates who the audience for the text is. Which persuasive devices can you find evidence of in the leaflets? Which presentational devices can you find evidence of in the leaflets?

Task Write your own article aimed at persuading teenagers not to start smoking in the first place. Success criteria… did you; Lay out the article in the appropriate format? Use persuasive devices effectively? Use appropriate vocabulary? Create a serious but informal tone?

Plenary Highlight and annotate your article to show where you have met the success criteria for this task. Identify through annotation, how you would adapt your article for an older audience.
